This winter I decided to do something a little different and went to canada for 5 weeks to work on a ski hill. I woke up at 3am and got the 4am air coach to the airport where my great experience began. On the flight over I thought a lot about my trip and what it would be like but I have to say the real thing was much better. I arrived in Thunder Bay at around 2pm and I got to see my cousins for the first time in about 5 years. The next day I was put right to work. I had no idea what my job would consist of but was looking forward to it none the less. I woke at 7am and was at the ski hill (loch Lomond) for 8am sharp.
My first job was to shovel all the snow that had fallen the night before off the deck of the chalet. It was tiring work but honest work. Next i was shown how to operate the different chair lifts and how to stop them in case of an emergency etc. I picked up on it very quickly and was given my first shift. i worked 4 hours at the bottom of the hill and 4 at the top, the top is way easier as all you have to do is sit in a warm hut and make sure no one falls coming off the chairlift. I had finished for the day and eventually got home to have a nice sauna and off to bed.
I worked every day from tuesday through sunday and on monday i worked for my uncles business secure store. There was night skiing available at the ski hill so everyday after work i would go out skiing with a few friends i had made from the hill. I learned how to do rails and jumps on my skis with help from my friends. I also decided to learn how to snowboard for the first time, i got no lessons and taught myself how to do it. I picked it up very quickly and soon after i was hitting jumps on the snowboard.
Everyone who worked at the hill with me was very nice and helped me along when i didnt know what to do. I also took part in helping an international fis race on the ski hill.
